A mysterious Instagram post from John Cena has left fans wondering if Peacemaker could be coming to Fortnite as a playable character soon.
A cryptic social media post by John Cena suggests that Peacemaker could be the next DC character to be featured as a playable skin in Fortnite. While Christopher Smith and his gunslinging alter-ego have been a part of DC Comics since the mid-60s, mainstream audiences got their first exposure to the man devoted to peace in last year’s The Suicide Squad. John Cena would reprise the role of Peacemaker in this year’s Peacemaker series on HBO Max, where he partners with fellow anti-heroes like Vigilante to stop an invasion by an army of mind-controlling alien parasites.
Meanwhile, Fortnite has seen plenty of crossovers with movies, comics, and other games over the years, with appearances ranging from classic DC villains like the Joker and Harley Quinn to more contemporary terrors like The Batman Who Laughs. Last year, Epic even collaborated with DC to publish Batman/Fortnite Zero Point, a six-part miniseries that saw the Dark Knight battle against characters like G.I. Joe’s Snake-Eyes in a twisted game of Fortnite. Meanwhile, Marvel has seen the Fortnite debut of Spider-Man’s classic nemesis the Green Goblin, and Uncharted’s Nathan Drake and Chole Frazer will be landing on the Island later this week to promote the upcoming Uncharted film.
Now, it seems like the one and only Peacemaker could be joining them in Fortnite, at least according to a mysterious image that John Cena recently posted to Instagram. As reported by GameSpot, this post consists of an illustrated picture of the Island as shown from space, leaving many to speculate that a Fortnite skin in the former WWE star’s likeness could be announced soon. Fueling this speculation is the fact that Peacemaker’s season finale is set to air on HBO Max later this week, meaning that Epic and DC could be planning to announce the hypothetical Peacemaker skin to celebrate the show’s successful first season.
This isn’t the first time that Peacemaker has been hinted to appear in Fortnite. Rumors of a playable skin based on John Cena’s peace-loving mercenary were leaked back around the time The Suicide Squad was released last summer, though this would ultimately be proven false. Due to his relatively obscure nature before The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker has rarely appeared in any DC-based video games, only making a cameo appearance in 2013’s Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure. This might change after the mainstream success of the Peacemaker TV series, with some gamers suggesting that Rocksteady could give Peacemaker his own video game after the Batman: Arkham developer finishes its work on the recently-delayed Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.
John Cena has made plenty of random social media posts in the past, and his recent Fortnite tease could just be a show of appreciation for Epic’s massively-popular multiplayer battle royale title. On the other hand, now that mainstream audiences have fallen in love with Peacemaker, the timing could be just right for the rogue to drop into Fortnite as a playable skin right as the first season of his show is drawing to a close. After all, given that the Island is still reeling from the world-shaking events of Fortnite Chapter 2, the citizens of Fortnite could probably use some peace right about now.
