Fortnite has begun to official tease its Chapter 3 finale event, Fracture, including a preview of apparently what is going to happen in new artwork, seen above.
The Fracture event appears like it will, unsurprisingly, destroy the map, which is how these chapter endings usually go, except for that one time (last time) that the entire map flipped upside down to reveal another one underneath it. Regardless, a new map is coming, and this time, a year earlier than past chapters.
The artwork above shows a series of chrome tornados tearing up the landscape, with the chrome infection being a major plot point at the end of this chapter. This will all commence at the official date and time of the event, December 3 at 4 PM ET. The assumption is that after that, the game will go offline and Chapter 4, season 1 will begin early Sunday morning, and players will be able to see the new map, additions and battle pass when they log in then. A countdown to the event start has now appeared in the game, so you can keep track of how far away it is. Right now, it’s just over 11 days away, as it not happening over the holiday weekend, but the one after.
There is also some news that apparently, the event may be as long as 40 minutes, which would be the longest in-game event we’ve seen, I believe. This is gleaned from a post about the event which says that while you should log in 30 minutes early at 3:30 PM ET, you can also join in-progress, something past events have largely not let players do, until 4:40 PM ET. That would imply that the in-game event is actually, somehow, 40 minutes long, when usually these are no more than 10-15 minutes in the past. So it's entirely possible that after a long while of relatively low-key season endings, Epic may have been saving up for a truly uh, epic, Chapter 3 ending here.
The event will also be squad based, similar to how past recent events have worked, with some combat encounters and a small cluster of allies fighting alongside you. These have not really been “100 players staring at something big happening on the map” events like we used to get. Epic has recently invested in tech to allow greater scaling for more people existing in event instances at one time, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet.
So yes, block out your Saturday afternoon two weeks from now for this. Unlike past things like concerts, this will be a one-time only event, and if it really is 40 minutes long, will be something you don’t want to miss, I’m guessing.
