It’s the start of a new year, and those still playing the iconic battle royale game are likely wondering what the rarest Fortnite skins in 2022 are. Well, we’ve put together this list of the rarest skins we could find and compiled them all into one handy list.

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

rarest fortnite skins 2021

52. Special Forces

The Special Forces skin was originally available in the Item Shop for 1,200 V-Bucks back in Nov. 2017.

It hasn’t been seen since, making it one of the rarest skins in Fortnite as, if you didn’t get it way back then when Fortnite was still exploding in popularity, you won’t have it.

51. Infiltrator

Infiltrator is another early Fortnite skin that’s skyrocketed in popularity since its rare appearances in the Item Shop.

Originally released in Nov. 2017, the skin has only appeared in the shop 25 times, the most recent of which was August 2019, over two years ago.

50. Sash Sergeant

A rare-rarity skin, Sash Sergeant originally released in March, 2018, and is essentially a re-skin style based on the original Jonesy skin.

This reskin sees Jonesy donning a Park Ranger-style look, but sadly it’s not been seen since May 2019 and only showed up in the Item Shop 17 times prior to this.

49. Sledge

Sledge is easily one of the rarest Fortnite skins in 2022, thanks to the fact it’s only ever showed up in the Item Shop twice, on Sept. 3 and Sept. 4 in 2019.

It was available for 1,200 V-Bucks and even received an Arctic Enforcer style in the 13.20 patch last year. Even then, Epic opted not to bring it back to the Item Shop. Will it ever return? Only time will tell.

48. Munitions Major

Munitions Major is another rare Fortnite skin based on the original Jonesy character. This time around he’s donned in army gear, and was available in the Item Shop for 800 V-Bucks.

It was last seen on Sept. 6, 2019, and only appeared in the Item Shop five times prior to that, debuting on March 11, 2019. It’s unclear whether it will ever return to the Item Shop given how basic a design it is.

47. Sureshot

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Sureshot is another uncommon-rarity Fortnite skin that’s become increasingly rare thanks to its lack of appearances in the Item Shop.

In fact, Sureshot’s only ever been in the Item Shop once, on Sept. 26, 2019 for 800 V-Bucks. There’s no word on if it will ever return, making it without a doubt one of the rarest skins in Fortnite in 2022.

46. Freestyle

The Freestyle skin is a female skin with headphones and a jacket that has speaker shoulder pads. I don’t think we need to further explain just why this skin is so cool.

Alas, it only had two, two-day stints in Fortnite’s Item Shop where it was available for 1,500 V-Bucks as an ‘Epic’ rarity skin, August 24-25, 2019 and Oct. 9-10, 2019. It’s unclear whether we’ll see the skin return to the Item Shop, but the longer its absence, the rarer it gets.

45. Chief Hopper

Chief Hopper is one of the Stranger Things skins that was added into Fortnite in July 2019 to celebrate the release of the third season of Netflix’s supernatural series.

Appearing for a three-day stint from July 5-7, 2019 as its debut, Hopper only ever returned to the Item Shop in Nov. 6 that year.

There’s no word on if or when Chief Hopper will return to the Item Shop, but we’d assume it’ll return to celebrate the release of Stranger Things Season 4 in 2022.

44. Demogorgon

You can’t have a good guy skin like Chief Hopped without their evil counterpart, and that’s what the Demogorgon skin is. The big-bad of Stranger Things appeared in Fortnite’s Item Shop for the same three-day stint in July 2019 as Chief Hopper, as well as the one-day appearance on Nov. 6.

Like the Chief Hopper skin, there’s no announced return for the skin, but we’d assume it’ll also return with the release of Stranger Things Season 4 in 2022.

43. Shaman

Easily one of the coolest-looking of the rare Fortnite skins in 2022 is the Shaman skin. This Epic-rarity skin was available in the Item Shop for 1,500 V-Bucks but was only available for four days, beginning March 31, 2019.

Since then, it only appeared in April, July and December of 2019 for a single day. It remains to be seen whether or not the skin will return but we really hope so, as it’s an exceptionally well-designed skin.

42. Double Helix

The Double Helix is one of the rarest Fortnite skins. It comes as part of a Nintendo Switch hardware bundle, so only players who shelled out the cash on picking up this specific Switch SKU will be able to get it.

41. Hacivat

Easily the rarest skin in Fortnite in 2022, is Hacivat. The item originally released back in September 2018 for 1500 V-Bucks and hasn’t returned since.

That’s a massive 748 days since it last showed up in the Item Shop!

40. Axiom

The Axiom skin is part of the Third Eye set and was originally released on March 20, 2019. It was available for 1,200 V-Bucks in the Item Shop during Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 8.

It was last seen 616 days ago!

39. Psion

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Another skin from the Third Eye set, Psion also released on March 20, 2019 for 1,200 V-Bucks.

The Psion skin is a cool female spy skin, perfect for all you stealthy types out there.

38. Radiant Striker

Despite having featured a number of times in the Item Shop since its original release on April 7, 2018, Radiant Striker hasn’t returned to the Item Shop since December 1, 2019.

That means the skins been missing for almost 18 months now. It’s not the most exciting of skins, so there’s a chance it’ll never return to the Item Shop in favor of more impressive designs.

37. Hyperion

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

The Hyperion skin is a Rare skin from the Hyper set. It was released on February 16, 2018 for 1,200 V-Bucks.

It was last made available 769 days ago on Jan. 30, 2019. It’s another fairly basic skin, with one of the default skin characters repping an orange vest top with a blue and gold headband.

36. Jack Gourdon

A skin with a pumpkin for a head. We’re all about this one, and that’s why Jack Gourdon is our favorite rare skin in Fortnite.

Releasing back in October 2018 for the Halloween period, Jack Gourdon has only returned to the Item Shop a handful of times since then. Your best bet to get this rare Fortnite skin now is to keep your eyes peeled on the Item Shop around Halloween going forward. Even then, there’s no guarantee it’ll return.

35. Midnight Ops

Part of the Stealth Syndicate set and a blue rarity skin, Midnight Ops is another of those cosmetics that just doesn’t do the rounds in the Item Shop all that much.

In fact, almost all of its 11 appearances in the Item Shop were between its initial release in April 2018, and October of that year. It did show up on October 21, 2020 for a day but hasn’t returned since.

34. Deep Sea Dominator/ Destroyer

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

The Deep Sea Dominator and Deep Sea Destroyer skins are part of the Deep Sea Set. Both skins were released in February 2019, and haven’t been seen in the Item Shop since June 17th that year.

These skins are rare simply because of how long it’s been since we’ve seen them show up in the Item Shop. It’s only featured three times in total in the Item Shop and June 17, 2019 was a huge 739 days ago. If you managed to nab this at the time, you may have got yourself an incredibly rare skin.

33. Star-Spangled Ranger

Another bunch of festive skins, the Star Spangled Ranger are Epic’s cosmetics to help celebrate the Fourth of July. They only ever appear in the Item Shop around this massive American holiday, too.

If you ask us, they’re pretty bland skins. But those looking to build their collection of rare Fortnite skins, this is one you’ll want to add to your Locker.

32. Codename E.L.F

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Obvious festive Fortnite skin is festive… and rare! Codename E.L.F is one of the rarest skins in Fortnite due to the fact that it can only be purchased from the Item Shop, and it’s hardly ever in there.

Originally releasing in Dec. 2017, the skin was only in the Item Shop twice, once then, and once at the end of Jan. 2018… for some weird reason. It did show up in the Polar Legends Pack, however, but given this was a slightly more expensive festive-themed set, we still think Codename E.L.F. remains a rare Fortnite skin in 2022.

31. Hollowhead

Hollowhead is like the aforementioned Jack Gourdon skin but on steroids that make his head glow ominously. Originally released via the Item Shop back in Oct. 18, the skin has only shown up four more times since then.

Three times in the buildup to Halloween 2018, and twice in 2019 around late October. Its lack of appearances in the Item Shop make it a very rare Fortnite skin indeed.

30. Fable

The Fable skin was part of the Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 6 Battle Pass, and required players to reach Tier 47 in order to unlock it.

This isn’t a reactive skin, nor does it have any kind of special ability or alternate style you can select. It’s rare simply because it’s never shown up in the Item Shop after its Battle Pass debut.

29. Dire

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

The Dire skin was the Tier 100 reward back in Season 6. In its Stage 1 form, it’s pretty basic and fairly common. However, to go full werewolf with this skin, players had to rack up 250,000 XP in order to get Stage 6.

It’s this Stage 6 Dire skin that makes it onto our list of rarest Fortnite skins in 2022. With the skin not coming back to the Item Shop, if you don’t already have it, you’re fresh out of luck.

28. Galaxy

You guessed it, it’s another one of the platform-exclusive Fortnite skins. The Galaxy skin was obtainable for those that picked up either the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, or the Galaxy Tab S4. Once you had either of these devices, you simply had to download Fortnite and log-in with your account to add it to your Locker.

Alas, the Galaxy skin was discontinued after the release of these two devices, meaning if you didn’t get one back then, you’ll never be able to get the Galaxy skin again.

27. Backbone

If you’re after a tough and gruff-looking biker skin in Fortnite, then the Backbone skin is the one for you. This skin is the epitome of American biker gang member, and was released in the Item Shop on August 31, 2018.

Since then, Backbone has only featured in the Item Shop another three times, once in September and October 2018 respectively, and another in February 2019.

As the skin can only be purchased from the Item Shop, the Backbone skin has become one of the rarest Fortnite skins you can have in your Locker.

26. Omega

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Fortnite’s Omega skin was the Tier 100 reward for the Season 4 Battle Pass. Complete all those challenges and grind out enough games and it could have been yours.

The Omega skin had a number of additional parts and unlockable styles that players could earn by focusing on their Season Level back in Season 4. Therefore, if you spot anyone with a fully-decked-out Omega with red, green, purple or yellow accents, you know you’re messing with a pro.

25. Blue Team Leader

The Blue Team Leader wasn’t some Tier 100 skin. Nor does it rarely appear in the Item Shop. Instead, this skin is rare because it’s exclusive to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

The PS Plus Fortnite Battle Royale: PlayStation Plus Celebration Pack is a free download from the PlayStation Store for PS Plus subscribers and contains the Blue Team Leader skin. Even then, it’s such a tiny portion of players, and not everyone eligible has downloaded it. This is an easy way to get one of the rarest Fortnite skins in 2022.

24. Yuletide Ranger

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Yuletide Ranger is a festive skin, as you might have guessed by its name. While only costing 800 V-Bucks when it shows up in the Item Shop, it’s still fairly rare due to its limited time on-sale.

It did make multiple appearances during 2019’s festive season, but still remains one of the least-featured skins in Fortnite’s Item Shop.

23. Recon Expert

Recon Expert stands as arguably the rarest skin in Fortnite in 2022. The reason? A perfect storm of factors.

First, Recon Expert isn’t the most exciting skin you can get in Fortnite. It also released back when Fortnite was still growing in popularity back in Oct. 2017.

The skin hasn’t returned to the Item Shop since. As such, it didn’t sell massively well when it first released due to lower player numbers and being fairly uninteresting. Now it’s sought-after simply because of how rare it is.

22. Merry Marauder

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

If you want to play Fortnite as an angry gingerbread man, then look no further than the Merry Marauder.

This skin is, once again, a festive skin and has only appeared a handful of times in the Item Shop. It also released back when Fortnite wasn’t massively popular, which certainly helped make it one of the rarest Fortnite skins in 2022.

21. Renegade Raider

Now we’re getting into some of the seriously hardcore rare Fortnite skins. The Renegade Raider was only available to those who played Battle Royale back in Season 1. You had to reach Level 20 to even have the choice to purchase it for 1200 V-Bucks from what was then known as the Season Shop.

The Renegade Raider has never appeared in the Item Shop since.

20. Aerial Assault Trooper

The Aerial Assault Trooper is another of the incredibly rare Fortnite skins in 2022 for a similar reason to the Renegade Raider.

This skin was only available during Season 1, and required players to reach Level 15 before they had the choice to purchase it from the ‘Season Shop’ as it was called back then for 1200 V-Bucks. Considering hardly anyone was playing Fortnite back then, these are stupidly rare.

19. Moisty Merman

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

The Moisty Merman is a reminder of times gone by in Fortnite Battle Royale. A bastion of the Moisty Mire era. Anyway, now we’re done reminiscing, we should probably explain why it’s so rare.

With a hefty 2000 V-Buck price tag, and having only appeared in the Item Shop about 10 times since its release back in May ‘18, it’s no surprise players haven’t flocked to buy it.

18. Dusk

Dusk is part of the Nite Coven set, and originally appeared as part of the Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 6 Battle Pass. Players had to reach Tier 71 in order to unlock it.

Since then, Dusk hasn’t featured in the Item Shop, and given her relatively high Tier unlock requirement on the Battle Pass all those seasons ago, it’s one of the rarer skins you can get in Fortnite in 2022.

17. Ghoul Trooper

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

The Ghoul Trooper is one of Fortnite’s spooky Halloween skins, and is one of the OG skins sought after by so many. Releasing back in Oct. ‘17 for Halloween, the Ghoul Trooper skin has only returned to the Item Shop briefly for stints around the spooky season in 2019 and 2020.

Given its infrequent appearances, it’s still one of the rarest Fortnite skins in 2022.

16. Aeronaut

Aeronaut is a rare Fortnite skin that first debuted back in Chapter 1 Season 10. It’s part of the Sky Stalker set and was available to buy in the Item Shop for 1,200 V-Bucks.

Sadly, the Aeronaut only ever showed up twice in the Item Shop, once on Sept. 10, 2019 when it first released and then once more later that year on Nov. 21, 2019. This makes it an incredibly rare skin, and will only get more and more rare the longer it doesn’t show up in the Item Shop.

15. Tracker

The Tracker skin was first added in Fortnite’s very first season, arriving in the Item Shop for 800 V-Bucks. It’s another fairly generic-looking skin, based on one of the stock skins you use if you don’t have a skin equipped.

Tracker hasn’t been in the Item Shop since Nov. 20, 2019 and has only appeared in the shops nine times since it first debuted on Nov. 1, 2017.

14. Dominator

The Dominator skin is an uncommon rarity skin that was first added in Fortnite’s very first season all the way back in December 2017. It’s not the most exciting of skins, but it had a price tag of 800 V-Bucks when it did feature in the Item Shop.

The last time it showed up in the Item Shop was Nov. 8, 2019, suggesting it’s fallen out of the rotation of skins that will show up in the in-game store moving forward. That means it’s only going to become more of a rare Fortnite skin in the future.

13. The Reaper

Before the officially-licensed John Wick skin released last year, Epic Games were kinda sneaky and had The Reaper. Despite now claiming it’s not supposed to be John Wick since its release (it totally is, though), The Reaper was so sought-after because everyone wanted to be the Boogyman of the Battle Royale island.

Getting the skin required players to reach Tier 100 back in Season 3. It was totally possible, but with significantly fewer players back then and a tougher grind up to Tier 100 back then compared to now, it’s still incredibly rare.

12. Leviathan

The Leviathan skin is one that simply doesn’t get as much time in the Item Shop as it probably should. It’s a Legendary-rarity skin costing 2000 V-Bucks to pick up, but it’s also a fish floating around in a fish bowl head. We love it, you should love it. But alas, we cannot buy it.

This skin does tend to surface on the Item Shop more frequently now, but thanks to its price tag and the fact it’s still only a few times a year that it appears, it’s fairly rare all the same.

11. Blue Squire

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

The Blue Squire is another of the skins that can be tracked all the way back to Fortnite Season 2. This one wasn’t quite as tricky to get as the Renegade Raider or Aerial Assault Trooper, though. All you needed to do to get the Blue Squire was buy the Season 2 Battle Pass.

Despite how simple it was to get, people just weren’t really playing Fortnite back then, and those who did were more sceptical about spending money on skins or Battle Passes for a game that hadn’t yet proven itself.

10. Black Widow

The Black Widow skin originally featured as part of the Marvel’s Avengers event that celebrated the launch of Avengers Endgame in cinemas back in April 2019. While the skin was made available in the Item Shop for two stints of three days each back in April and May 2019, Black Widow hasn’t returned since.

This means if you missed out on the Avengers skins back then, you’re out in the cold. That being said, Epic Games and Disney may opt to bring the Black Widow skin back to Fortnite’s Item Shop in July this year to celebrate the release of her movie. Only time will tell!

9. Purple Glow Skull Trooper

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

For a while, the original Skull Trooper was considered one of the rarest Fortnite skins. Having released as part of the Halloween even in 2017, it had not been seen in the shop for a year.

In 2018, however, it returned, making it more common among the masses. However, those who owned the original Skull Trooper from 2017 were given the Purple Glow style. The Purple Glow Skull Trooper now steals its crown as one of the rarest Fortnite skins in 2022.

8. Honor Guard

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

The Honor Guard skin has only ever been available for those who purchase the Honor 20 smartphone. Just like the Galaxy skin, those who played Fortnite on their Honor 20 would have the Honor Guard skin added to their Locker.

The racing jumpsuit look is rather basic, but that blue really pops. The skin was due to hit the Item Shop once the promotion had finished, but for whatever reason this still hasn’t happened.

Given the Honor 20 wasn’t a massively popular phone, the Honor Guard skin is without a doubt one of the rarest skins in Fortnite in 2022.

7. Deadfall

Introduced all the way back in Fortnite Chapter 1 Season 10, the Deadfall skin is part of the Siege Strike set and was available to purchase for 800 V-Bucks from the Item Shop.

Sadly, it’s not been seen since Oct. 2nd, 2019, which coincidentally was the first and only day it ever showed up in the Item Shop.

6. Black Knight

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

The Black Knight was one of the original rewards for reaching the top tier of the Battle Pass. Specifically, if players reached Tier 70 in the Season 2 Battle Pass, they’d net themselves the Black Knight skin.

The skin has never been made available in the Item Shop, making it near impossible to now get.

5. Royale Bomber

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Yet another platform-exclusive skin, the Royale Bomber could only be obtained by either purchasing a PS4 hardware bundle, or by picking up a DualShock 4 controller with promotional packaging.

Either of these would net you a code that could be used to redeem the Royale Bomber skin, alongside other cosmetics. It’s never come to the Item Shop or been made available any other way and likely never will.

4. Drift

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Let’s get one thing right out of the way. The basic Drift skin isn’t what’s rare here. This could be unlocked by simply purchasing the Battle Pass in Season 5.

Instead, what’s rare is its Style 6 look, that requires players to earn 200,000 XP to unlock. Drift cannot be purchased, so if you missed out on it then it’s a lost cause.

3. Ragnarok

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Also in Season 5 was the Ragnarok skin. This was earned by reaching Tier 100 on the Battle Pass. Just like Drift, though, Ragnarok had a number of additional styles that could be unlocked. To unlock its final stage requires 500,000 XP. Only the most hardcore Fortnite players have Ragnarok’s full set, making it one of the rarest Fortnite skins in 2022.

2. Star-Lord

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Blue squire is the first skin you received in the season 2 battle pass. Blue squire is the first skin you received in the season 2 battle pass. The blue squire (fortnite) all blue.

Another Marvel skin makes the cut in the rarest Fortnite skins in 2022, and it’s the Guardians of the Galaxy front man, Star-Lord. Released on April 30, 2019 for 1,500 V-Bucks, the skin was only in the Item Shop for 5 days during this release window before disappearing and never returning.

Epic Games hasn’t announced whether or not the Marvel skins will ever return to the Item Shop since their initial release during the Endgame event in 2019. Until it does, this will remain one of the rarest skins you can get.

1. Sparkle Specialist

Rarest Fortnite Skins 2022

Rounding out our list is yet another Season 2 skin. To earn the Sparkle Specialist, players needed to reach Tier 56 on the Battle Pass. It has never featured on the Item Shop and likely never will. A true rarity in the world of Fortnite.

52. Double Helix

52. Double Helix

The Double Helix is one of the rarest Fortnite skins. It comes as part of a Nintendo Switch hardware bundle, so only players who shelled out the cash on picking up this specific Switch SKU will be able to get it.
